Monday 13 July 2015

Soulfit Adventures is leading the way on July 19, 2015 on a retreat incorporating adventure and the exploration of yoga and cycling in Cambodia.

WE are overjoyed with excitement to be leading the way on July 19, 2015 on the first of a kind adventurous retreat, amidst the ancient temples, jungles, hidden treasures and forests of Cambodia. An enchanting land, untroubled and serenely beautiful where in the spiritual and historical heart of Cambodia, you will unquestionably find a little piece of you, and more.
A road less travelled awaits us, to remote and local communities being our backdrop for an idyllic place to explore your very own inner landscape, guided through yoga, cycling, hiking, and space to simply be…doing as much or as little as you choose.
Cambodia’s Ancient Cities and her surrounding lands welcome everybody, all ages, and levels of fitness, anybody, and everybody who wants to escape the busyness of everyday life.
Our super excited team have developed a way of immersing you into an adventure on two wheels integrating yoga sequences to align and restore you to your natural self. Cycling and yoga weave a common thread throughout our wellbeing—by encompassing the elements and balance of yin and yang. A journey interweaving cycling – a meditation in motion, as we inhale and exhale the trails of Cambodia’s beauty discovering the ‘seat of our soul’ together, through morning and evening asana.
Sounds too good to be true…right?
(I hear you, YES, tell me more…)
We’ve carefully chosen perfectly designed boutique hotels and eco-resorts for the retreats duration of 11 nights, where we awake each morning opening the body to yoga before pedaling into friendly and engaging communities that line the secondary roads and back trails of this intriguing country. Angkor Wat is a favourite however we will discover a wider appreciation of all that is Cambodia and, most importantly, our true peaceful revitalised cycling-yogic selves.
We begin in Siem Reap, noticing the exhalation extends a little longer than ordinary, and begin to explore Cambodia’s offerings with the unknown realization that an authentic culinary journey awaits and compliments the retreat. (Does it get any better…)?
Our fun is sprawled over 400+ km’s of pedalling — paced over eleven full days. From the first sunrise drinking in the iconic religious monuments of Angkor Wat from across the Reflecting Pool, as the sun greets the day ahead and monkeys watch over through the soft morning light at the group moving into a clearing in the forest. Just like the river nearby we fluidly move through a short yoga practice before cycling onto the winding roads ahead, which overlook the moat. Pure magnificence.

As we, together, a group actively practice our yogic mindsets on a bike pedaling away and becoming present in the day. Around about now on Day 1 everybody lets go of life’s daily troubles, and unbeknown to us as we ride on they are preparing the nights delight of Fish Amok, a classic Khmer dish steamed and served in a banana leaf with a little coconut cream on top. The colour is beautiful with a sprinkling of julienned red bell pepper and kaffir lime leaf ribbons, waiting for our plates!
We connect with the Mekong River amongst our travels, as the boat begins a journey taking us to the floating communities that are known as home to locals here. The experience we have mapped out along the river invites you to the remoteness of a collection of villages; you will only too happily raise the corners of your mouths, again. It is only Day 2.
The 7th century temples and ruins are upon us and the aches from the initial cycling days diminish away as our adventure continues to places beyond tourism. This is a journey of a lifetime bursting with yoga by the poolside, zigzagging our way through rice paddies, from wooden shacks by the river to the eccentric city of Phnom Penh where a rest day awaits at the Plantation Urban Resort. Yes, it is well deserved and rewarded here. We pause, stop and reflect.
By now we are convinced Cambodia’s diverse landscapes were created for a cycling and yoga tour only, it’s perfection on every level and on day 7 & 9, we eagerly ride the most challenging trails—encompassing up to 100 km a day of purifying and exhilarating scenery, meeting water buffalo’s to seeing coconuts and Palm trees. The blissful trance Cambodia places everyone under awakens all the senses as we trek on to Kirirom Mountain, which is surrounded by Pine trees. The mountain allows us to ride, shuttle car our way to the top or take a vehicle, easy. It is always your choice in Cambodia. It is about you here.
And towards the end of our retreat we find deserted beaches offering a chance to immerse ourselves in cleansing salty waters before continuing our discoveries to yet another secluded guesthouse perched on top of a hill, Sihanoukville.
Breathing and pushing the pedals in between laughs and smiles onto the coastal roads, sandy beaches and mountains before landing on the tip of the Gulf of Thailand and the final destination Kep.
The team at SoulFit Adventures honours you know where your bodies are at and if you want to skip the cycling, it’s completely up to you, and you are welcome to jump in the support vehicle. Non-cycling friends and partners are also welcome.
Cambodia will leave you, or you will leave Cambodia with much more than the breathtaking scenery and experience—you will leave with a transformational little piece of you to share with everybody.
The only way to experience Cambodia!
And as the saying goes “If you can’t beat them, join (follow) them”. We ask everybody to join us, even if you can’t be there physically. Follow along with us and be a part of the adventures that lay ahead—follow, tweet or share as we partake on the transformational beautifully mapped out journeys that make SoulFit Adventures lead the way in healthy holidays today.
Collectively, as one, with you.

Hi all,

Keep Calm, It's Nearly Christmas!!! That just about sums it up doesn't it! Can you believe that it's that time of the year already?  Where has the year gone?

NEW LOGO

You might have also noticed something different at the top of this blog. No? Well if you missed it, this is our brand, spanking new logo! We are in love with it and hope you love it too. If you are wondering, the inspiration behind the symbol is a bicycle wheel incorporated with the leaf and petal of a bodhi tree. Whilst the meaning behind the 'O' in soulfit is pretty obvious, I hope! You are getting a sneak peek at it now as it won't be officially be rolled out until January 2015.

TOP 5 TIPS TO HELP AVOID THE CHRISTMAS BULGE!

Do you love to get into the spirit of the festive season, but then curse yourself later on! If you do, then this is my gift to you this year. I thought I would share with you with my 5 tops tips to help you avoid the extra kilo or 2 that might creep on over the festive season...:-).  Let's face it, who doesn't sneek that extra piece of something..;-)!

1.  Go for a ride on a bike, a walk, a swim at least once a day. It doesn't really
matter, just keep active. If it's winter where you are, then get to your local gym
     and move that booty!

2.  Do a yoga class - either in the convenience of your own home online, or at a studio.
3.  Have an alcohol/indulgence free day!
4.  Keep your food portions under control - easier said than done I know!
5.  Focus on socialising rather than eating and eat something healthy before going out.

If you do at least one thing on the list above, then you might just keep that extra kilo or 2 at bay. It is a time of celebration though, so enjoy..:-).

Finally, on a slightly more serious note, this time of the year can be a challenging time for some people.  Whilst it is a beautiful time of the year and brings great joy and happiness to some, it can be a lonely and sad time for others, especially given the recent sad incident in Sydney and in other places around the world this year. So whilst we celebrate, maybe we can also take a moment and remember those that might be hurting or less fortunate than us.

That's all from me in 2014. Wishing you and your families a fabulous, festive and very Merry Christmas and, a safe and happy New Year.  Here's to 2015 and all the adventures that await.

Keep calm, Christmas is nearly here:-).

All the very best.
Virginia

"We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us" Anon

I love this quote and feel that it sums up what SoulFit adventures holidays are all about, a chance to live life to the fullest, and to travel for the shear joy of life not just to get away from it.

I have spent the last few of months since returning from the 3rd successful SoulFit adventures yoga and cycling holiday in Italy planning the SoulFit adventures calendar for 2015, and what a year it's shaping up to be!  If you happen to live in the Southern Hemisphere then spring is just around the corner and it's the perfect time for a spring clean and to start planning your next adventure.  If you live in the Northern Hemisphere and are at then end of summer, then it's also the perfect time to reassess your priorities.

Along with all the SoulFit adventure favourites in Italy, Bali and Laos,  I am so excited to be offering a new SoulFit adventure in 2015.  If you haven't heard already, SoulFit adventures is going to France, Provence to be exact!!  I spent a fabulous 6 days in Provence after the conclusion of the Italian retreat in June on a scouting tour and I can't wait for you to read all about it!  Think lavender, rosemary, vineyards, Provencal villages and of course it wouldn't be a SoulFit adventure without yoga and cycling...:-).

So without further delay see following for the low down on what's happening in 2015!

Great group dynamics, beautiful scenery, lovely villa, a trip of a lifetime! Thank you so much also for your fantastic yoga classes!!! Lastly, I must say to you that I thought you did a fantastic job, I loved every day, and I loved meeting all those amazing human beings (you included). I was quite aware that I was the oldest person in the group and that I am in a completely different chapter in my life than everyone else but thank God, it really didn’t matter. Another highlight was the massage by Isa ……… I doubt I’ll ever have another as good.  Jenny Kenny, Canada, June 2014

SoulFit Adventures Cycling and Yoga Retreat - Cycling & Yoga Adventures, Mekong Yoga Experiences, Foodie Extravaganza

Hello or Sabaidee as they say in Laos!  I am just back from another fabulous 11 days of cycling and yoga around Northern Laos.  Everytime I go I fall a little bit more in love with the country and it's people.  It's just one of those places..

Julie, our fabulous yoga instructor and first time SoulFit adventurer has written a short piece on her experience.  As you will see when you read Julie's piece, a SoulFit adventure retreat is more than just a holiday!

I’m a yoga teacher, not a cyclist by any standards. In fact, until two weeks ago I had never really enjoyed cycling much. The most I had cycled in recent years was a basic commute to and from the different places where I teach yoga around Luang Prabang. When Virginia from SoulFit Adventures contacted me to ask whether I’d like to join her as a yoga teacher on the next trip around Northern Laos, I certainly had a few concerns. I might have been inclined to turn the offer down had I not gone to bed a month earlier with a plea to the universe to have someone invite me to teach on their retreat. As it turns out, the universe was listening. But a cycling retreat? I took it as a sign – the universe telling me to once again do something I never thought I would. I’ve lived in Laos for over a year and traveled a fair bit through the country. The mountain roads would be no easy feat.

Now, a week after the completion of the journey, I’m in awe at what the human mind and body is capable of, I’ve fallen in love all over again with the country I’ve chosen to live in, and feel more connected to the people who call it home. For until you can appreciate every uphill and downhill through the experience of your own physical effort and mental will, you cannot truly appreciate the lives of the people who live each day in the villages scattered throughout.

The SoulFit Adventures’ “Cycling for the Soul in Northern Laos” trip is not just about cycling however. It’s a high-end retreat that takes you not only through stunning countryside, but also to some pretty upmarket establishments. Massages included throughout the trip and unlimited yoga ensures a quick recovery for tired muscles. Oh and did I mention the food? Local street food and gourmet gastronomy provided us with much-needed energy. Our local guide Saylom made sure we were always fully stocked with a delicious assortment of fruit for our regular breaks along the road.

Off course, for me, teaching and practicing yoga in some of the most beautiful locations was a highlight. From yoga decks overlooking the Namkhan River to awe-inspiring Mekong yoga experiences, I really felt my smallness in the bigger scheme of things. As many yoga postures draw their inspiration from nature, practicing in beautiful and natural surroundings really helps to build a sense of connection to world in which we live.

Whether you’re a yogi, cyclist, foodie or adventure junkie, the SoulFit Adventures retreat in Laos has something for you. I guarantee you’ll discover something new and perhaps you’ll even walk away a little bit transformed. Julie Moksim, Yoga Instructor, Laos

Tis the Season to be Jolly..

Where has the year gone?
Um hello, what happened to the year? Where has it gone?  One day it was the middle of July and now it’s only just over 2 weeks until the end of the calendar year!

I hope you are starting to wind down and relax a little after what has no doubt been a busy year for many of you.  Hopefully you will have some time to sit back and relax and reflect on your year over the coming weeks.

This year has been a busy year for SoulFit adventures with lots happening including the inaugural yoga and cycling retreat to Italy back in June.  That retreat was such a success that I have developed 2 new Italian offerings for 2013 and will be running 4 trips in total!

One is a ladies only retreat welcoming women travelling on their own without being alone. No kids, no couples, only other likeminded women at any one time. The holiday is a soul soothing retreat for women who want the ultimate relaxation hassle free travel experience.  The week includes daily yoga, cooking classes, wine tastings, shopping excursions and, it wouldn't be a SoulFit adventure if there wasn't one day of cycling!

The other one is for all the wanna be Cadel Evans or Bradley Wiggins out there and will be run in the lead up to the 2013 UCI Road World Championships which take place in and around Lucca, Pistoia, Prato and Florence in September 2013.  It's the eightieth Road World Championships and the first time that the event will take place in Tuscany, one of the heartlands of Italian cycling! Perfect for cycling enthusiasts wanting to get some cycling in (with daily yoga of course!) before the action starts.

Both of these new retreats will be held in and around our luxury accommodation, Villa Santa Maria al Lago, an elegant 14th century country house which has amongst other unique features, its' own private lake and which is set in Marlia, a small hamlet at the base of the Lucchese hills. If you are wondering why Lucca is the base for all of our Italian retreats, then check out this article which was published this week to see just some of the reasons - http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/travel/a/-/travel/15526500/i-love-lucca/

Laos
At the end of October a group returned from SoulFit adventures signature 11 day yoga and cycling tour through Northern Laos. I wasn't able to accompany the group this time but from all reports it was a fabulous trip and one to remember.  The lovely Maggie, who was a participant on this trip kindly offered to write a brief summary of her experience and I thought I would share it with you today. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did when I first received it. Take it away Maggie..

“That was the best holiday ever! When we first flew over Laos and into Luang Prabang, I was a little concerned at how mountainous it was and how I would cope cycling up all those hills!   Luang Prabang is one of the loveliest places I have ever been to. No rush, no traffic, no congestion, a slow and beautiful pace. The minute I arrived in 100% humidity and 30 odd degrees I felt an instant calm.

10 days of yoga and cycling around the northern part of Laos was indeed a trip to remember for the rest of my life.  I needn't have worried about those massive hills over mountains though. Laos is a totally landlocked country and yet we were beside water every day. All the roads in the northern part of Laos are beside the Mekong and the many rivers that flow from her and, we rode beside the river.

Cycling through little villages with the children running out of homes and schools to stand on the side of the road waving and wanting to “hi 5” us as we rode by.  Markets with very different produce for sale than what we would not normally see in our shops.   The Laotian people waste nothing and eat everything.  The beautiful tropical fruits, the chickens, dogs, ducks, pigs, buffalo, cats all roaming the roads around the villages, all part of the Laotian way of life.

We stayed in wonderful accommodation, the food was to die for and everything was so clean and tidy.  Most of the towns we stayed in, we were the only “Phalang” but never once did I feel unsafe or unwanted in their towns.   We travelled beside the river every day and stayed by the river every night.  There were 2 days which we spent on a boat travelling down the river.   One day in a traditional skiff and another day in a very luxurious long boat both equally as exciting and interesting.   The river provides so much livelihood for the villagers and the riverbanks were dotted with vegetable gardens and water buffalo.

We visited Pak Ou caves where the locals hid during the war.  Pak Beng where most of the people from China, Thailand and the north come into Laos on the river. Muang La which was a little bit of paradise in the middle of nowhere and where I had the pleasure of spending my birthday!

Thank you to Isabelle, our fantastic yoga teacher - the best way in the world to start the day and thank you Virginia for organising such a wonderful itinerary.

I could go on and on about the wonderful 10 days I had in a country as yet untouched by mass tourism but you need to go and experience it yourself and cycling around Laos and practising yoga every day with SoulFit adventures is the best way to see it.

Laos is a truly beautiful country and I certainly feel SoulFit and will be doing it again! ” Maggie Jennings, Sydney, Australia
